Two-piece capsules remain the dominant delivery format for dietary supplements — for good reason.

Two-piece capsules are the workhorse format of the supplement industry. Consumers recognize them, dose-accuracy is straightforward, the format accommodates a wider range of active ingredient classes than any other dosage form, and the production economics scale cleanly from launch-quantity 5,000-unit runs to multi-million-unit annual programs. Almost every category of dietary supplement that does not require a liquid or chewable delivery sells well as a capsule.

Capsule manufacturing — done correctly — sits on three operational fundamentals: blend uniformity verification before fill, qualified shell sourcing for the chosen shell material, and third-party verification of active content on every finished batch. Most capsule co-packers handle the encapsulation step competently. The variability lives in the blending and the testing — where label-claim accuracy is decided, and where a manufacturer's quality program is actually visible.

Sun's capsule manufacturing program is built around those fundamentals. Blend uniformity is verified before fill on every multi-ingredient run. Shell sourcing is qualified by material type and supplier. Every batch is sampled by an independent third-party accredited laboratory for active identity, potency against label claims, and microbial safety. The Certificate of Analysis is the standard deliverable on every production run, not an upcharge.

Capsule shell materials

Shell selection is driven by your label positioning, target consumer, and price-per-unit ceiling. We fill three shell materials and recommend selection during the formulation phase.

Gelatin capsules

Bovine or porcine gelatin in sizes 000 through 5. The most cost-effective and widely-used shell in dietary supplements. Clear or opaque finishes. Fast dissolution. Suitable for the majority of supplement formulas and the default choice when no plant-based positioning is required. Not compatible with vegetarian or vegan label claims.

HPMC capsules

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose — plant-derived, suitable for vegetarian positioning, acceptable to consumers avoiding animal-derived products. Slightly higher per-unit cost than gelatin. Dissolution profile is comparable to gelatin for most powder-fill formulas. The default practitioner-channel and premium-consumer choice.

Pullulan capsules

Plant-derived from tapioca starch fermentation. The cleanest label story of the three shell options. Suitable for vegan-certifiable label claims and preferred in natural retail, functional wellness, and clean-label premium tiers. Higher cost per unit than gelatin or HPMC; the shell premium is supported by the label premium pullulan products typically command.

What we fill

The shell is the delivery mechanism. The fill is where the formulation work lives. Sun's capsule lines run across the major categories the supplement industry asks capsule manufacturers to handle:

Single-ingredient capsules

Creatine monohydrate, collagen peptides, colostrum, freeze-dried beef organs, ashwagandha, vitamin D3, magnesium glycinate, zinc, NAC, quercetin, curcumin, and similar single-active programs. These programs move faster from brief to production because formulation complexity is low and most components are in Sun's existing supplier network.

Multi-ingredient blends

Multi-active formulas requiring precise ratio control across ingredients with different densities, particle sizes, and flow characteristics. Pre-workout stacks, nootropic blends, sleep formulas, immune compounds, multivitamins, sports-nutrition stacks, and practitioner-channel signature formulations. Blend uniformity is documented and verified before fill on every multi-ingredient run.

Botanical and adaptogen capsules

Standardized botanical extracts — ashwagandha (withanolide standardization), rhodiola, holy basil, milk thistle, dandelion, ginger, and similar. Standardization documentation is reviewed during sourcing; heavy metals testing on every batch in this category is standard protocol. Single-ingredient botanical programs or multi-botanical adaptogen blends both within scope.

High-volume Amazon and retail categories

The capsule categories with established Amazon search volume and retail-channel velocity — creatine, collagen, magnesium, vitamin D, multivitamin, sports stacks, sleep formulas, immune blends — are all routine production at Sun. FNSKU labeling for Amazon programs is handled in-house. FBA-compliant case packs are standard pack-out configurations.

Custom capsule formulation development

Brands starting from a concept brief rather than a finished formula work with Sun's formulators to develop the formula — selecting actives, dose targets, excipients, capsule shell, and capsule size — before bench-sample production. Formulation development typically adds 2 to 4 weeks to the overall lead time.

Practitioner-channel capsule formulations

Practitioner-line capsules differ from retail capsules in dose targeting (clinically-meaningful rather than commodity-channel pricing), shell preference (typically HPMC or pullulan for patient populations), and bottle configuration (30-day or 60-day patient supply). Sun's capsule program serves both channels from the same production lines.

The capsule manufacturing process from brief to finished goods

 1. Discovery call. We discuss your formula (or concept), target active dose, shell type preference, capsule size, bottle count configuration, channel (Amazon, retail, DTC, practitioner), MOQ, and timeline. Quote and milestone timeline within one business day.
 2. Formulation review or development. If you bring a complete formula, we review it for fill compatibility, density, and flow characteristics — then move to component costing. If you start from a brief, our formulators build a blend to your specifications and produce bench samples for evaluation.
 3. Sample approval. Production-representative samples are provided from the approved blend. You evaluate, test, and confirm. Once you sign off, the formula specification is locked. No changes after lock without a new sample approval cycle.
 4. Component procurement. Active ingredients, excipients, capsule shells, bottles, and labels are sourced in parallel. Raw material COAs are reviewed before components enter production.
 5. Production. Blending, encapsulation, polishing, and bottling run on Sun's in-house lines under cGMP batch documentation. Blend uniformity is verified before encapsulation commences. In-process weight checks run throughout the production run.
 6. Third-party testing. Every batch is sampled and sent to an independent accredited laboratory for active identity and potency verification, microbial safety, and label claim validation. The Certificate of Analysis is issued before shipment — not as an afterthought.
 7. Packaging, labeling, and case-packing. Bottles are labeled and case-packed to your channel-specific configuration — FBA-ready pallets, display-ready retail cases, or individual shipper cartons. FNSKU application for Amazon programs is in-house.
 8. Fulfillment. Finished goods can ship the same week labeling completes — to your warehouse, to Amazon FBA inbound, or to consumers and retailers through Sun's integrated fulfillment operation.

What capsule supplement buyers look for in a manufacturer

Capsule contract manufacturing is a relatively well-developed market segment. The buyers searching "capsule manufacturer" are typically working through the same short list of operational and compliance criteria:

 • Blend uniformity verification before fill. Fill weight alone does not prove potency uniformity. A qualified manufacturer samples blend uniformity before encapsulation. Sun runs blend uniformity checks on every multi-ingredient batch — particularly critical for low-dose actives where non-uniform blending can produce bottles at 60% or 140% of label claim.
 • Third-party COA from an accredited lab, every batch. Self-testing by the manufacturer is a conflict of interest. Sun's batch testing is performed by accredited independent laboratories. The COA is a third-party result with a traceable chain of custody.
 • Documented batch records. Regulatory inquiries, retail buyer audits, and Amazon compliance reviews happen. Complete batch records — every ingredient weight-in, every in-process check, every lab result — are the documentation that protects the brand. Sun produces complete batch records on every production run.
 • Consistent run-over-run output. The failure mode that ends manufacturing relationships is inconsistency — a batch that fills at a different weight, dissolves differently, or tests different from the prior run. This is a process-control problem, addressed by locked specifications, documented procedures, and qualified equipment.
 • FDA registration and cGMP compliance. The baseline credentials. Without them, retail and marketplace platforms increasingly restrict listing eligibility. Sun's facility carries both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order quantity for capsule manufacturing?

Sun's standard capsule MOQ is 5,000 units across formats and ingredient categories. The number applies to single-ingredient capsules and to multi-ingredient blends. For established brands running recurring production cycles, larger volumes are accommodated on flexible scheduling. Quote within one business day of your initial inquiry, including format, sourcing, and packaging line items.

What capsule shell materials and sizes are available?

Two-piece capsules in three shell materials — gelatin (bovine or porcine), HPMC (plant-derived, vegetarian), and pullulan (plant-derived, vegan-certifiable) — across sizes 000 through 5. Size 00 and size 0 are the most common consumer-supplement sizes; smaller sizes are used for higher-density active fills, larger sizes for high-dose single-ingredient programs. We recommend shell and size based on your formula's density and target fill weight during the discovery call.

What capsule supplement categories does Sun manufacture?

Single-ingredient capsules — creatine monohydrate, collagen, colostrum, beef organ, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, NAC, ashwagandha, curcumin, and similar — and multi-ingredient blends including pre-workout stacks, sleep formulas, immune blends, multivitamins, sports compounds, and practitioner-channel signature formulations. Sun's capsule line is set up for the highest-volume Amazon, retail, and practitioner-channel supplement categories.

How is capsule manufacturing different from encapsulation services?

Capsule manufacturing is the full production program — formulation, blending, encapsulation, polishing, bottling, labeling, packaging, and quality release. Encapsulation services refer specifically to the fill step in isolation — typically used by brands that supply their own blended formula and contract only the capsule-filling operation. Sun offers both. For most brand operators, full-service capsule manufacturing is the right path; encapsulation services serves a narrower set of buyers (typically formulators or agencies with established supply chains).

What is the lead time for capsule manufacturing?

Standard lead time is 6 to 10 weeks from formula approval and component arrival to finished, packaged, COA-released goods. Components in Sun's existing supplier network move faster. New components — exotic actives, specific extract standardizations, or specialty capsule shells — can extend the timeline by 2 to 3 weeks. Repeat orders on established formulas typically run faster than first-time production.

Do you provide third-party Certificates of Analysis for capsule batches?

Yes. Every Sun capsule batch is sampled and tested by an independent accredited laboratory for active ingredient identity, potency against label claims, and microbial safety. Heavy metals testing on relevant categories (beef organ, botanical extracts, minerals). The Certificate of Analysis is provided with every batch — not as an upcharge.

What is the typical capsule fill weight range Sun produces?

Approximately 100 mg (size 5 capsules with low-density actives) up to 1,400 mg (size 000 capsules with high-density fills). Size 00 capsules — the consumer-supplement default — typically fill at 500–800 mg depending on the active blend's density. Size and fill weight selection is part of the formulation phase; we recommend based on your active dose target and the bottle count configuration the brand needs.

Are you FDA-registered and cGMP-compliant?

Yes. Sun operates an FDA-registered, cGMP-compliant facility in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Every production run is documented under cGMP batch records, and third-party laboratory testing verifies identity and potency on every batch. FDA registration and cGMP compliance are the baseline credentials that retail buyers, marketplace platforms, and informed consumers look for when evaluating supplement manufacturing.

Can you handle bottling, labeling, and FBA-ready packaging in-house?

Yes. Capsule manufacturing at Sun runs through to FBA-ready or retail-ready inventory. Bottle filling (30-count through 180-count HDPE or PET), labeling (pressure-sensitive or full-wrap shrink sleeve), FNSKU application for Amazon programs, case-pack assembly, and outbound shipping all happen in-house. There is no external 3PL leg between production and channel-ready inventory.
